Sgang Gwaay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for being the location of the largest collection of standing carved poles. Sgang Gwaay is a historic Haida village as well as being a Haida Reserve and a National Historic Site. The still-standing mortuary and memorial poles at Sgang Gwaay were carved in the 1880's and 90's. The house poles bearing the crests of the families living at Sgang Gwaay were removed by museum collectors beginning around 1900.
