Brown, Captain Andrew

BiographyAndrew Brown (1879 - 1962) or (1865 - 1962) Massett. His Haida name, Owtiwans meant Big Eagle, and was inherited from a grandfather of Hippa Island. Brown himself came from Yan. Carved a great many poles in a long career and often signed them. The reason he was known as 'Captain' was that, according to his own account, he "was the first to make a sailing schooner, at the time when the Hudson's Bay Company built a store in Massett".
