Descriptionknot of hemlock steamed and bent into shape. no line attached. Newcombe notes 'used in fishing for black cod on the west coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands, attached to lines made of kelp, in deep water, ranging from 200 to 250 fathoms. when baited with pieces of halibut or other fish and small wooden peg is inserted so as to keep the two ends apart. when a fish bites, this peg escapes and the ends of the hook closes like a spring and hold it fast."
