Descriptioneffigy, carved from a single piece of blonde coloured wood. smooth rounded stem is moulded into an 'hourglass' formation near mouthpiece; at edge, stem is overlaid with a 1cm wide brass ring. cross section of stem is marked by a 0.2mm diameter bore hole. stem flows into an upward turning, elliptically shaped pipebowl, truncated at bowl's mouth. front of bowl is carved into a 'whiteman sailor's' face in frontal view. sailor has heavy eyebrows, lenticular shaped eyes, nose, open toothless mouth, and a long point chin. encasing chin, up to hairline, is a closely cropped 'ailors' beard. flowing waves of hair fromt the face; both beard and hair are deeply striated to convey hair strands. a 'headband' incised with diagonal lines, wraps around head at pipebowl edge. upper surfae of pipebowl is overlaid with a 0.5cm thick brass covering, in teh centre of which is a 2cm diameter hole. this hole, extending down full depth of bowl, is lined with brass. a large wooden 'curliqur' projects from back of sailor's head to pipe stem. projecting out ffrom sailor's forehead is a short wood stub with groove along upper surfface and striations along lower surface.On View
