Descriptiontruncated cone in shape with circular crown and flaring brim. crown is partially convex and partially concave. commenced at crown with a radial start of spruce root. two cencentric bands consisting of double rows of two ply twill twining are woven around crown on a background of two ply z twist twining. the foundation is then bent over the sides to become the warp with the perimeter fastened with an additional row of three ply z twist twining. the walls are divided into two sections delineated by a row of z twist twining. upper portion (11.8cm wide) is worked as crown with six evenly spaced conccentric circles of double rows of twill twining. lower field (12.3cm wide) is decorated iwth diamond motifs of two ply twill twining on a background of plain two ply z twist twining. to form the rim, the warp strands (each consisting of layers) are truncated at the last weft row and fastened with a three ply braid and a row of two ply z twist twining visible on exterior only (variation of Emmons, 1902, page 248, figure 312). a cylindrical headband of spruce root (4.2cm wide) is woven on the interior commencing 7.9cm from the crown to make the hat fit the wearer. separate strands are bent around the wefts to form a double warp worked in two ply twill twining. the selvedge is formed by bending the trimmed warps to the exterior over the adjacent warp strands and securing with a row of two ply z twist twining. double sstrap of white string is threaded through warps at each side of headband and would fit under chin of wearer. eexterior surface is covered with black pitch.
