Descriptiona- lion and unicorn plaque: high relief and painted. G.S.C catalogue describes as 'set of 4 cyprus carvings'. lavel on front of specimen reads 'set of 54 yellow cedar carvings'. see VII-B-902b,c,d. straight base with wide central carved area curved to narrow ends on each side. central orb, ressembling St. Georges cross. Unicorn like figure on right and lion like, man faced figure on lefft, upper bodies only, carved scroll like curves on ends. flat background painted red. possibly patterened off a ships stern board.
b- painted, floral design. G.S.C catalogue describes a set of 4 carvings, see also VII-B-904a,c,d. single board, with design on 1 side only, confined by 0.24" rolled border along sides, and 4" wide plain band at ends, symterical design carved from a centre leaf, of fvine and 3, 4 petal flower. background painted an old red. square nail holes in front suggesting board probably fastened as a lintel, as design runs horizontally.
c/d- attached, painted scroll design. G.S.C catalogue describes as a set of 4 carvings, see also 904a,b. c/d form a unit as each is half of a symetrical design. 0.5" wide plain rolled border along top only. design low relief of leaf like scrolls. background painted red. nail holes in front suggest method of attachment. does not appear to go with other pieces.
