Descriptionhalibut hook withs traight shank carved froma single piece of wood (crabapple). central part of shank is rounded in cross section, flattening and widening slightly towards ends. one end flares into flat circular projection carved with a face on one side. eyes and mouth are elliptical depressions and triangular nose is delineated by two crossed incised lines. other end of hook is rectangular with rounded notch carved at centre and oval hole cut through ccentre 1.9cm from end. a leader made of two strands of root or bark twisted together with a loop at one end is reeved through hole (originally other end of leader passed through loop and leader was wrapped with split root close to hook but most of leader is now broken off). one end of a tapering barb (approx. 6cm long), carved from a single piece of bone with v notch cut on inner edge near pointed tip, is lashed diagonally to each side of shank withs tring. shank is lashed with strips of split spruce root from below carved face to centre of shank. the number "960" (?) is faintly marked in ink on one side of shank near notched end.collected in Masset
