DescriptionHalibut hook made from two separate carved wood pieces lashed together with cotton twine at one end and forming an overall v-shaped instrument. The upper piece is carved from Yew wood with a relief carving of a dogfish (small species of shark) covering the upper surface. The underside of this piece is concave. The piece is drilled through the centre of its length to hold a twined cotton lanyard that is knotted on the underside to hold it in place. The bottom shank of the hook is carved from hemlock. A steel spike has been fitted and lashed with cotton twine to the outer end with the sharp end pointing inward. The bottom shank shows signs of wear and teeth marks from captured fish.
