Descriptionsotage box, wood, four sides are made from a single handmade board, kerfed at intervals, then steamed and bent. last corner joint and bottom board are fastened by wooden pegs. 6.5cm deep lid is carved from a single block of wood and has a slight inside rim which fitss inside box. sides of lid have been painted black, and two opposite sides are inlaid with red turbain shell opercula; on one side, there are 9 opercula, in 3 certical rows of 3; on other isde are 18 (one now missing) arranged in 3 sets of 6 each. the box is fully decorated on 4 sides with painted designs. designs consist of two symmetrical, highly abstracted animal figures, each complete design covering 2 faces of the box, with the axis of symmetry at the corner. each design consists of a large animal head, a smaller elaborated body area, and appendages with ovoid joints. main formlines and tertiary lines are in black, secondary lines are in red. box and lid are lashed with a double rope of 2 strand twisted cedar bark. wood used in box is probably red cedar.collected in Massett
