Descriptionpainted storage box, lid decorated with shells and tied with cedar bark cord. upright square shape box made from single length of wood is kerfed, steamed and bent at three corners; fourth ccorrner held together by series of seven pegs. flat bottom with rounded edges is pegged to base at all 4 sides. box is fully deccorated on four sides with black and red painted design of an animal figure. each design covers two faces of the box wiht the axis of symmetry placed at the corner. figure has large head, with circular ears, ovoid eyeform containing inner double eye forms and large downturned mouth. body of animal outlined in black, but red secondary lines and black tertiary lines and cross hatching badly faded. unpainted lid (35x33.5x8.5cm) is carved from single block of wood with flared sides leading up to flat top. one edge decorated with three vvertical rows of red turbon shell opercula., each row cinsiting of 4 shells set horizontally into the wood. split lozenge shape design etched into back sinister corner of lid top and small footed cross design etched into front sinisteer corner. a double strand of 2 ply, 2 twist, cedar bark cord is wrapped twice vertically and horizontally around sides and base of box and forms loops at four cornerss of lid. the lower horizontal strand wraps behind vertical cords and over horizontal ones to form loop binding 4 strands together. an additional single strand of 2 ply cord passes through corner loops of box lid and the ends are loosely tied at one corner.
