Descriptiontruncated cone in shape with circular concave crown and flaring brim. commenced at crown with a radial start of spruce root worked in three ply z twist twining technique. the foundation is then bent over the sides to become the warp with tthe perimeter ffastened with a row of four ply braid (s twist on the exterior; z twist on the interior). the walls are deivided into two sections delineated by a row of ffour ply braid as above. upper field (11.8cm wide) is worked in three ply z twist twining. lower field (11.3cm wide) is decorated with vertical zig zag motifs of two ply twill twining on a background of plain two ply z twist twining. single weft rrow around rim is applied in two ply z twist twining. to form the rim, the warp strands (each consisting of two to three layers) are truncated at the last weft row and fastened with a five ply braid (visible on exterior only) and a row of two ply z twist twining. a cylindrical headband (4.6cm wide) is woven on the interior commencing 7.2cm from teh crown to make the hat fit the wearer. separate strands are bent around the wefts to form a double warp worked in two ply z twist twill twiningg. the selvedge is formed by bending the warps to the exterior over the adjacent warp strands and securing with two rows of two ply z twist twining. selvedge is bound with red fabirc secured with double strand of thread in running stitch.surfafce is darkeend and appears to have originally been painted.
the skip stitch pattern on the hat is the snails tail pattern.
