Descriptionmaul, grooved type for hafting, made from a single piece of dark grey stone by the pecking and grinding technique (Steward, p.41) with zoomorphic design carved on one end. maul is oval in cross section, with a flattened base. one end of maul is truncated to provide a flat surface for function of pounding. small concavity in upper edge of truncated end. opposite end is constricted slightly 4.5cm from taperin rounded tip and is pecked with face design of a toad (according to Newcombe) with large eye socket formed by circular depression and circular iris at centre in relief, and mouth delineated by depression at bottom of rounded end. deep groove (2.5cm wide) is carved around centre of maul 2.5cm from truncated end for attachment of maul to handle. the number "32" and "Massett" are marked in black ink on base.
