Descriptionmaul, grooved type for hafting, made from a single piece of grey stone by the pecking technique (Stewart, p.41). maul is roughly circular in cross section, with flattened base. one end of maul is truncated to provide a flat surface for function of pounding and then flares slightly on upper edge towards centre of maul. two shallow concavities in upper edge of truncated end. smooth deep groove (3.5cm wide) is carved around centre of maul 3.2cm from truncated end for attachment of maul to handle. maul tapers and becomes more pointed towards opposite end with shallow circular depression surrounding rounded tip. the number "1897" is marked in black ink on base of maul and "579" (?) is marked in groove at centre.
