Descriptionmaul, grooved type for hafting made from a single piece of dark grey stone by the pecking and grinding technique (Stewart, p. 41) with zoomorphic design carved on one end. maul is oval in cross section at centre, with a flattened base. base is broken at ends and along one side and cracked across one end. maul is constricted around centre then tapers gradually to a rounded point at one endd forming head of a toad (according to Newcombe), the mouth delineated by a line incised along rounded tip, circular slightly bulbous eyes carved in relief, and slight ridge down centtre of head between eyes. area below and to side of eyes is cracked and a square piece of stone is broken off dexter side of head. other end of maul tapers abruptly and was probably originally truncated to provide a flat surface for pounding with a deep groove carved around centre of maul for attachment of maul to handle and forming the neck of hte toad, but is now rough and broken. the number "518" is printed on a rectangular piece of white paper and adhered to bas of toads head.
